Mac lipstick

There aren't a whole lot of things I'll spend more money on than I have to- especially not makeup. I don't wear it nearly enough to justify spending more than a couple bucks. So, when I end up buying some, whether it be eyeshadow or lipstick, I usually get the cheapest kind of the color I want and call it a day. Except I had been looking for a very dark purple lipstick for nearly forever and I didn't have much choice but to spend nearly seven times what I'd spent on all of my other lipsticks. Almost all of my lipsticks were in the $2-$4 range and I adored them all, so I thought "why spend any more on a tube of lipstick if these cheap ones work just fine?" I usually snagged the Wet n Wild brand from my local drugstore, and they stained my lips quickly and hardly came off throughout the day even as I ate or drank, plus they were sold in the perfect shades that this girl could ask for.
But, like I said, I was looking for a dark purple shade to no avail so when I tried on a $17 dollar dark purple lipstick at Mac, I didn't care the price. For just this once, I told myself, I'd splurge a little on more expensive lipstick that would probably still be worth the price. I'd heard a lot of good talk about Mac lipsticks and Mac products in general. I, however wasn't very impressed.
I applied lip liner, the lipstick, and a gloss at the Mac counter at Macy's, but when I got home, which was about an hour later, only the lipliner was left. I looked pretty silly to say the least. I wiped off the liner and called it a day.
The next time I wore the Mac lipstick, it smudged on my teeth and gums when I smiled and I also found myself reapplying it throughout the day.
My two and only times so far of wearing that lipstick came to no avail, but I'm still chalking it up to "the gloss was too wet which made everything come off easily when I took that one drink of water," and "Chapstick being applied before the lipstick just doesn't work for this kind." I have faith that eventually it'll be able to be worn like all of my other lipsticks, without the fear of smiling, but for now I'm honestly kind of scared to wear it in public because I don't want to look like a fool.

(Any suggestions or tips would be appreciated!)
